Culgoa National Park, Outback NSW

Culgoa National Park in the state's north on the New South Wales - Queensland border to the north east of Bourke maybe small but no less significant than the larger and more recognised National Parks, especially in light of Indigenous and European history.

Located in the upper Darling catchment, it is a place of spectacular birdlife that abounds along the banks of coolibah-lined Culgoa River. It is a park are ideal for walking, relaxing and enjoying the tranquil beaty of the outback.

Culgoa’s colourful spring wildflower display is not to be missed, centred on the Culgoa floodplain and the woodlands.

Sit in the shade of a coolabah tree and watch the bustards, falcons, honeyeaters, brolgas and cockatoos, along with wildlife including kangaroos and emus on the open grass plains.

There’s also extensive Aboriginal and European heritage to explore, with stone tools and cooking sites a reminder of the long association Aborigines have had with Culgoa.

Culgoa is a top place for camping – there’s a site among the gidgee trees a near the river, with easy access to the riverbank and Connelly's Walks.

Culgoa National Park is 100 km north of Brewarrina or 180 km north east of Bourke.  Roads to Culgoa National Park are unsealed dry-weather roads.


Autumn, winter and spring are the best times to visit, avoiding the extreme summer heat.
